Personal Taxes

A sole proprietorship is the simplest form of business ownership in Canada. It is an unincorporated business owned and operated by one individual, where there is no legal distinction between the owner and the business.

The owner personally earns all the profits, but also assumes all responsibilities, debts, and liabilities of the business. Income from the business is reported directly on the owner’s personal income tax return (T1) using Form T2125 – Statement of Business or Professional Activities.

Sole proprietorships are easy to set up and manage, making them ideal for freelancers, consultants, and small business owners starting out. However, since the owner and business are legally the same entity, the owner’s personal assets are not protected from business liabilities.

Sole Proprietorship

A Fractional CFO (Chief Financial Officer) or Fractional Controller is a part-time or contract-based financial professional who provides experienced financial leadership, strategic insight, and operational oversight — without the cost or commitment of a full-time executive.

Our professionals typically partner with multiple businesses, dedicating a set number of hours or days per month to each client. They bring the same level of expertise, systems thinking, and accountability as an in-house CFO or Controller, but with the flexibility and scalability that growing organizations need.
Fractional CFOs and Controllers help bridge the gap between basic bookkeeping and full-time executive finance management. They work closely with owners, leadership teams, and accountants to interpret financial data, strengthen decision-making, manage cash flow, implement controls, and develop long-term financial strategies that drive profitability and stability.

In short, they provide senior-level financial clarity, structure, and foresight — at a fraction of the cost of a full-time hire.

Here Are a Few Answers

Need Clarity? Here Are a Few Answers

It is easy to file your taxes with The Accountants’ Square.

i. A questionnaire will be completed. This is so that we do not overlook any tax
related situations that can affect the outcome of your tax return.

ii. We will arrange a meeting/phone all/virtual meeting if necessary. Most of the times, all that is needed is an email requesting tax documents to start your tax return.

iii. Provide us with your tax documents. There are options in delivering your tax info to us; hand delivered, courier, or provide them through email. We can also come to where you are to pick up documents for a fee if you reside in Metro Vancouver or Calgary.

iv. We complete your tax return. After your return is completed, we will communicate any necessary information that you should know immediately so that we can
resolve them prior to filing your tax return.

v. e-file your tax return. If there are no pending issues when we complete your tax return, we will file your tax return with the CRA.

The RRSP limit for 2025 is 18% of your earned income for that tax year up to a
maximum of $32,490 (whichever is lower), plus the unused carried forward amount from previous years.

For example, if in 2024 you earned the maximum contribution level of $31,560, but you contributed only $15,000. The remaining $16,560 that you could have contributed for 2024 tax year is carried forward indefinitely and added to the amount for your future tax year. Therefore, your 2025 tax year contribution limit will be $49,050 ($16,560 + $32,490).

The deadline to make RRSP contributions is 60 calendar days into the new year (e.g. For 2025 tax year, the deadline to make contributions is March 2, 2026).

The main differences between the these type of investment accounts are:

i. RRSP – contributions reduces taxable income and gains within the account are not taxed until they are withdrawn from the account.

ii. TFSA – contributions are not tax deductible and gains within the account are not taxable. Cannot use losses to deduct to deduct from capital gains.

iii. Unsheltered investment accounts – Contributions are not tax deductible and gains are fully taxable. Capital losses can offset capital gains in current year or can be carried back 3 years and carried forward indefinitely to offset capital gains in future years.

This depends on what your business needs are. Although there are other types of business structures, we will focus on the main ones; self-proprietorship and corporations. Here are the general differences between the two. Incorporating is a complex procedure and we can help you in setting up your company.

  Self-proprietor Corporations
Legal status Business and owners are considered legally the same. A separate legal entity on its own separate from its owners (shareholders).
Ease of setting up Generally simple & inexpensive Typically complex & expensive
Liability Unlimited liability; the owner's personal assets are at risk. Limited liability; personal assets are protected from business debts.
Complexity Simplest business structure to set up with less paperwork and fewer regulations. Complex to set up requiring more paperwork and annual filings.
Complexity of taxation Less complex. Tax is filed under the owner’s personal tax return (T1). Complex requiring knowledge of accounting and in-depth tax regulations. Filed on the T2 corporation return.
Tax filing deadlines June 15th is the deadline to file the business tax return. Taxes owing are due by April 30th. Six months after the year-end.

In Canada, you must file a tax return every year, even if there is no income or inactive. The requirement to file is based on the corporation’s legal status and not on its financial activity.
